PAA Supports Governor DeWine’s Request to Classify Kratom Compounds as Illegal Drugs

Prevention Action Alliance (PAA) strongly supports Governor DeWine’s call for the Ohio Board of Pharmacy to classify both natural and synthetic kratom compounds as illegal drugs. For too long, kratom products have been sold across Ohio without oversight, regulation, or quality control—posing serious risks to public health and safety. Classifying these compounds as Schedule I controlled substances is a critical step to protect Ohioans from the growing dangers of a drug often marketed as “natural” or “safe” yet act on the brain in ways similar to opioids. Increasingly, kratom is being modified into synthetic versions that heighten its potency and danger. Packaged as gummies, drinks, or powders, these products create a direct pathway for youth access and misuse.

As a prevention organization, we witness firsthand the consequences of unregulated substances entering our communities: families struggling with addiction, young people targeted with deceptive marketing, and communities bearing the burden of preventable harm. Kratom is not just a trend; it is a public health crisis that requires immediate policy action.

However, kratom’s threat to public health is preventable. Strong policy, oversight, and regulation are essential tools to stop substance misuse before it starts and to protect Ohioans from the devastating consequences of unregulated products. By acting now, Ohio can lead the nation in addressing this emerging threat and set a precedent for prioritizing the health and safety of its citizens.

Prevention Action Alliance applauds Governor DeWine’s leadership and urges decision-makers to act quickly. Prevention must come first. Removing kratom products from Ohio shelves is a vital step to safeguard our children, strengthen our communities, and ensure that public health remains Ohio’s top priority.
