Practical Principle 2: Positive Family Communication

To encourage youth and support strong families and communities, try incorporating the Guiding Growth tips below into your daily routine

Practical Principle: Positive Family Communication

Young person and their parent(s) communicate positively, and that young person is willing to seek advice and counsel from parent(s).

Guiding Growths

  • To feel comfortable talking openly with family members, think about a “family statement wall” in your house. DIY a space on the wall in a common room and put up note-size paper and a pen so that family members can feel welcome to share their thoughts, feelings and opinions about things without having the burden of sitting someone down and doing that face-to-face thing.
  • When talking remember to listen to understand rather than listen to respond. If you feel yourself wanting to interrupt or if you catch yourself thinking of your response pause and remember that you love the person talking to you too much not to hear them out.
