To encourage youth and support strong families and communities, try incorporating the Guiding Growth tips below into your daily routine
Practical Principle: Cultural Competence
Young person has knowledge of and comfort with people of different cultural/racial/ethnic backgrounds.
Guiding Growths
- Use dinner time to talk cultural competence as a family. Plan a month of “Takeout Tuesdays” and intentionally go to local ethnic restaurants to learn about the people, their customs, and their food. Have your child(ren) ask questions of the restauranteurs so the experience nourishes more than their hunger.
- Introduce different cultures through music, movies, and YouTube. Have simple conversations with your son or daughter about how different people help make the world unique, interesting, and special and help them understand tolerance and acceptance.
