Practical Principle: Interpersonal Competence

Young person has empathy, sensitivity, and friendship skills.

Guiding Growths

  • Have your elementary-aged child(ren) create a “friend list.” Help them write down all the qualities they want in a friend and then have them refer to it when they’re meeting new people or when a friend disappoints them.
  • Have a family discussion about empathy and helping others when they need it. Choose a date on the calendar and call it “Empathy Day.” Let your child(ren) decide how they, individually, are going to help someone that day and then spend the day demonstrating empathy as a family.
